Consistency

The world has become an extremely agile place, where processes are always subject to change till the time we feel we have found one which is the most optimised. However, the world has also come to accept that this might never happen, and hence the change continues to be a norm across the globe.

Today, however, we will discuss a facet of life which in my very humble opinion has started to lose its place and value in the world today.

Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.

We are one month into the new year, and most of our new years resolutions have found a new setting date. I have met some people who have grown so sick of resolutions that they have made a resolution to never make resolutions (I know, convoluted).

For those who haven’t let their resolutions die yet, I want to take a second to acknowledge you, and tell you that I am proud of you. Keep going. And interestingly, that is the theme for today’s article here on Facets of Life.

Since we have been talking about new years resolutions, let’s take a second to clearly define what a “New Year’s resolution” comprises of. Every year, after getting sick of being complacent and not acting in the direction of our goals, 31st December approaches us to provide a sense of relief.

The new year gives us the sense that we have yet another year to accomplish our goals, and this will be the year when we would finally be able to turn everything around. Lose that weight, get those views on your content, write that book, reconnect with your loved ones, and the likes.

In that moment, we realise that something needs to change, and we are also cognisant of what that change is. So, as soon as the 1st of January hits, we are all in go-mode. We start with that exercise session, start creating content, open notepad & start writing the preface of our book and start calling our loved ones.

However, over a period of time, while we have been doing something for let’s say a month (no, this isn’t coincidental that the article is live on the 31st of January), the workout routine becomes less challenging. Content creation becomes a side activity again. Research for the book starts to take longer and the loved ones run out of things to talk about.

Humans, as much as we despise changes happening around us, constantly look for novelty as well. So, we start to find alternative ways to do the same things.

A new workout routine done by someone who has our dream physique is found. A new way to create more & better content is being taught by an “influencer” (please don’t get me started). Books appear to be out of date, let us be podcasters instead and the phone calls to loved ones start to develop some time gap in between.

This is what I have observed, and also developed a problem with. I’m going to be honest here, I am one of the “us” that we have been talking about so far, for the past 4 years. Every year I want to focus more on writing and spending time with family, be better at my job and be a better son, brother and husband.

But during the year, we (I’m hoping it’s not just me) start to lose focus because things don’t remain interesting anymore. Interestingly that is something we don’t realise is that the only thing that continues to have interest is debt. Things will eventually get boring, but that’s where we should dig deep and continue on our path.

Consistency will give us what novelty never will.

If you stuck around this far, thank you for your time. If you enjoyed this, share this with one friend of yours whom you think will benefit from reading this. Thanks for reading, and I will see you in the next one. 🙂
